A notable gallery at the heart of Nafplio
Nafplio is a city with an evident historical character that has many sights and memorials to display to a willing visitor. Housed in a neoclassical building, Nafplio National Gallery is a significant landmark of the city that offers the chance to its visitors to admire one of the finest and most complete museum collections in Greece. The Gallery was founded in 1900 and includes the collections of more than 20,000 paintings, sculptures, engravings and other art forms covering a period from the post-Byzantine era until today. The impressive mansion of the early 20th century was transformed into an Art Gallery in 2004, sponsored by the Alexandros S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation.The paintings are exhibited in sections, mainly dealing with themes and personalities from the Greek Revolution of 1821. The works of the famous Greek painters Gyzis, Lytras, Vryzakis and other well-known Greek and European artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries, are the highlights of the Gallery. In addition to the works of art collections, one can also admire objects of everyday use, as well as weaponry of the fighters of the Greek Revolution, in the showrooms of the Gallery.
